Which pressure unit should I use?

Different fields use different units by convention. Here's a quick guide to which unit you'll encounter where:

  • PSI (lb/in²) — US standard for car tire pressure, hydraulics, and compressed air. Car tires: 30–35 PSI. Bicycle tires: 80–130 PSI.
  • Bar — Common in Europe for tire pressure and industrial equipment. Car tires: ~2.2–2.5 bar.
  • Pascal / kPa — SI unit used in physics, engineering, and science. 1 kPa = 1,000 Pa.
  • mmHg — Medical standard worldwide for blood pressure and altitude medicine. Normal BP: 120/80 mmHg.
  • hPa / mbar — Meteorology. Standard sea-level atmosphere = 1013.25 hPa.
  • atm — Atmospheric pressure unit used in chemistry and scuba diving (1 atm per ~10 m depth).
