Which pressure unit should I use?
Different fields use different units by convention. Here's a quick guide to which unit you'll encounter where:
- PSI (lb/in²) — US standard for car tire pressure, hydraulics, and compressed air. Car tires: 30–35 PSI. Bicycle tires: 80–130 PSI.
- Bar — Common in Europe for tire pressure and industrial equipment. Car tires: ~2.2–2.5 bar.
- Pascal / kPa — SI unit used in physics, engineering, and science. 1 kPa = 1,000 Pa.
- mmHg — Medical standard worldwide for blood pressure and altitude medicine. Normal BP: 120/80 mmHg.
- hPa / mbar — Meteorology. Standard sea-level atmosphere = 1013.25 hPa.
- atm — Atmospheric pressure unit used in chemistry and scuba diving (1 atm per ~10 m depth).
Common pressure reference values
| Description | PSI | Bar | kPa |

| Standard atmosphere (sea level) | 14.7 | 1.013 | 101.3 |
| Typical car tire (32 PSI) | 32 | 2.206 | 220.6 |
| Bicycle tire (100 PSI) | 100 | 6.895 | 689.5 |
| Normal systolic blood pressure (120 mmHg) | 2.32 | 0.16 | 16 |
| Vacuum cleaner suction (~20 kPa) | 2.901 | 0.2 | 20 |
| Scuba tank (200 bar) | 2901 | 200 | 20000 |
