US vs UK volume units
The US customary system and UK imperial system use the same unit names (pint, quart, gallon, fluid ounce) but with different sizes. A US gallon = 3.785 L while a UK gallon = 4.546 L — about 20% larger. A US pint = 473 ml; a UK pint = 568 ml.
For cooking, US recipes use cups, tablespoons (tbsp), and teaspoons (tsp). 1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 236.6 ml. When adapting a recipe from US to metric, use 250 ml as an approximation for 1 cup.
Metric units (liters, milliliters) are used worldwide in science, medicine, and everyday life outside the US. A standard 500 ml water bottle is about 2.1 US cups or 16.9 fl oz.
