15% is considered the minimum, 18-20% is standard for good service, and 25%+ for excellent service. In the US, 20% has become the de-facto standard at sit-down restaurants.

Tip on the pre-tax amount is technically correct, but most people tip on the total bill for simplicity. The difference is small — on a $50 bill with 10% tax, tipping 20% on pre-tax is $10 vs $11 on post-tax.

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the bill separately, then add their tip portion.

In the US, tipping is customary but not legally required (except some restaurants add an automatic gratuity for large groups — always check your bill). Tipping is not expected in Japan and parts of Europe.

Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. Bellhop/porter: $1–2 per bag. Concierge: $5–20 for special assistance. Valet: $2–5 when retrieving your car.

For 20%: move the decimal one place left (10% of $45 = $4.50), then double it ($9.00). For 15%: find 10% and add half of that. For 18%: find 20% then subtract 10% of that.
